Chapter 8
Senior year was a whirlwind. Sean transferred to our school, and after he turned eighteen, he got an apartment in the same complex as me and Gloria. Instead of being happy for him, this seemed to fuel Kingâs unfounded hatred for Sean. They spent the first few months of school going at it on a daily basis. Even coming to blows a few times.
Kingâs dad was forced to step in. The club needed him to, before it went any farther.
The club made it known there would be no rivalry amongst any of its members. We were a brotherhood, and thatâs what King needed to realize. It came easy for Sean, Cruz, and me, but King was a different story. He felt threatened by my friendship with Sean and no matter how much I tried to convince him that we were all in this together, his behavior didnât change.
He never acted that way towards Cruz or myself, only Sean. Sean had a hard enough life as it was and King seemed to find joy in making it harder.
Cruz and I were always pulling him to the side to try and talk some sense into him before he got his ass handed to him by one of the other members. Nothing we said ever made a difference. The older King got, the more arrogant and full of himself he became. Just being around him took more of my energy than ever before.
He was still my boy, and I tried my best to get him to understand his actions were toxic for us and the club. But he was hard headed through and through. My words went in one ear and out the other, believing the fucked-up shit he made up in his mind. He refused to listen to anyone, so eventually, Cruz and I just threw our hands up and let him dig his own grave.
We didnât have to wait long for that moment either. After spring break, the four of us were focused on prom night and graduation. Unfortunately Buddy, the President of the Reapers, had other plans for us. The Reapers were sending us on a mission. This was going to be our last task before we were allowed to be patched into the club and I was ready. I thought I was prepared for anything.
Being a patched member meant a raise from the scraps they threw at us as prospects. I would have enough money to get the ring I had picked for Gloria. We were about to start our whole lives, and I wanted to be financially stable. At the minimum be able to pay the bills and put food on the table so that Gloria could go to college and focus on her studies. She wanted to be a nurse, and I wanted to help make her dreams come true.
We had a club meeting the night of our mission. Buddy, sat at the head of the table as all the members took their place, grabbing their chairs around the table.
